Alabama Debt Collection Attorneys
Being harassed because of your debts? There may be something you can do about it. Many people endure abusive and harassing behavior by debt collectors, unaware that these practices are illegal under federal law. If you have experienced harassment at the hands of debt collectors, you may be able to sue to get them to stop.
What are debt collectors allowed to do in Alabama?
Under the Fair Debt Collection Practices Act, debt collectors have to follow a very specific set of rules when it comes to contacting debtors. The are required to identify themselves as debt collectors and to provide basic information about the debt they seek to enforce. Collectors are prohibited from certain abusive practices, including:
- Continuous phone calls
- Contact at inconvenient times or places
- Abusive language
- Threats of violence or retribution
- Impersonation of police officers or other authorities
What can I do about it?
If you have experienced abusive behavior on the part of a debt collector, you should contact us immediately. Federal law penalizes abusive debt collectors by providing damages for each abusive act. In a case involving repeated phone calls, for example, this could lead to thousands of dollars in damages.
